Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
