EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial news:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the action was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
